About the languages of South America
This quiz covers the 8 countries of South America that have a single official language. Countries with several — Belgium, Switzerland, Canada — are left out, because a question with three right answers cannot be marked fairly.
The countries here run from Brazil at 8,515,767 km² to Suriname at 163,820 km², and from 212.8 million in Brazil down to 640 thousand in Suriname.
Between them those 8 countries speak 4 different official languages. Spanish is the most common, official in 5 of them — colonial history is most of the reason a language quiz is not the same shape as a map.
Distractors are taken from countries in the same region and never repeat a language, so the four options in a South America question are always four genuinely different answers.

Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in this quiz?
This quiz covers all 8 entries in South America. Questions are drawn from the full set, and the complete list appears in the table on this page.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no login. Your score stays in your own browser and is never sent anywhere.
How are the wrong answers chosen?
Deliberately, not at random. Each question prefers flags that are genuinely confusable with the right answer, then countries from the same sub-region, so guessing by elimination does not work.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free with no limit on how many times you play.
