About the capitals of South America
South America has 12 capital cities to learn. Some are the country's obvious largest city, and a good number are deliberately not — which is where a capitals quiz earns its keep.
The spread is wide: Brazil holds 212.8 million people while Suriname has 640 thousand. By land area Brazil covers 8,515,767 km² against 163,820 km² for Suriname.
The largest country by population in South America is Brazil, whose capital is Brasília. Purpose-built and relocated capitals are common enough here that the largest city is often the wrong answer.
The table below lists all 12 countries of South America against their capitals, so you can read it as a study sheet and then come back and play.

Frequently asked questions
How many countries are in this quiz?
This quiz covers all 12 entries in South America. Questions are drawn from the full set, and the complete list appears in the table on this page.
Do I need an account?
No. There is no sign-up and no login. Your score stays in your own browser and is never sent anywhere.
How are the wrong answers chosen?
Deliberately, not at random. Each question prefers flags that are genuinely confusable with the right answer, then countries from the same sub-region, so guessing by elimination does not work.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free with no limit on how many times you play.
