About the ocean quiz
There are five oceans on the division used here, with the Southern Ocean bounded at 60 degrees south. The Pacific alone holds nearly half the world's ocean water; the Arctic holds about a twenty-fifth.
Maximum depths are the deepest surveyed point in each basin, and the named point is given on each ocean's page so the figure can be checked.

Frequently asked questions
Are there four oceans or five?
Both divisions are in use. This quiz uses the five-ocean division, which recognises the Southern Ocean as the water south of 60 degrees south. Older schemes divide that water between the Atlantic, Indian and Pacific.
Which ocean is the deepest?
The Pacific, at the Challenger Deep in the Mariana Trench — about 10,911 metres, deeper than Everest is tall. The Arctic is the shallowest, averaging around 1,200 metres.
