About the languages of the Americas

This quiz covers the 27 countries of the Americas that have a single official language. Countries with several — Belgium, Switzerland, Canada — are left out, because a question with three right answers cannot be marked fairly.

The countries here run from United States at 9,372,610 km² to Saint Kitts and Nevis at 261 km², and from 341.8 million in United States down to 47 thousand in Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Between them those 27 countries speak 4 different official languages. Spanish is the most common, official in 14 of them — colonial history is most of the reason a language quiz is not the same shape as a map.

Distractors are taken from countries in the same region and never repeat a language, so the four options in a the Americas question are always four genuinely different answers.

Frequently asked questions

How many countries are in this quiz?

This quiz covers all 27 entries in the Americas. Questions are drawn from the full set, and the complete list appears in the table on this page.

Do I need an account?

No. There is no sign-up and no login. Your score stays in your own browser and is never sent anywhere.

How are the wrong answers chosen?

Deliberately, not at random. Each question prefers flags that are genuinely confusable with the right answer, then countries from the same sub-region, so guessing by elimination does not work.

Is it free?

Yes, completely free with no limit on how many times you play.
